Size Limitations • Materials needed by the cell for survival enter a cell through its surface. • At a certain point the surface area will be too small to allow materials to get into the cell fast enough.
Cytoskeleton A network of fibers extending throughout the cytoplasm. Always changing support movement of organelles
Microfilaments • Thin, solid, protein rods (actin). • Allow cell to change shape when they slide past one another. • I.E. Amoeba
Microtubules • Hollow tubes of proteins that give rigidity and shape. • Function: Provide tracks along which other organelles can move.
Flagella • Long thin whip-like structure. • Moves in an “S” shape to propel the cell. • Core of microtubules.
Cilia • Shorter and more numerous than flagella. • Made up of Microtubules. • Back and forth motion.
