  1. Any questions on the homework for Section 1.3 or the Practice Gateway Quiz before we start today’s Gateway Quiz? Please turn in your Practice Gateway Quiz worksheet for the assignment you did for today. The TA will pick them now, before we hand out the worksheets for today’s quiz.

  2. To take the quiz: • Put your calculators and cell phones away and close all tabs/windows on your laptop. • Log in to MyLab and Mastering • Click on “Assignments” • Click on

  3. Then select In-Class Gateway Quiz. • Enter the password (on whiteboard). • Click “I am ready to start”. • You will then have 20 minutes to complete the quiz. (If you finish early, feel free to get started on the next online homework assignment.) • Make sure you show all steps of your work for each problem in complete and clear detail on the paper worksheet. No calculators of any type may be used for this quiz. • When finished, click “submit” and then write your score on the answer sheet.

  4. Please CLOSE YOUR LAPTOPS

  5. Section 1.4 An algebraic equation is a statement that two expressions have equal value. Example: 2x + 3 = 5 – 7x • Equality is denoted by the phrases • equals • gives • is/was/should be • yields • amounts to • represents • is the same as

  6. Sample problem from today’s homework:

  7. We can also note that two expressions do not have equal value by using the  symbol. • Inequalities: • If a and b are real numbers, • a < b means a is to the left ofb on a number line. • a > b means a is to the right ofb on a number line.

  8. Example Translate the following sentences into algebraic symbols. The difference of 7 and a number is less than 42. ANSWER: 7 – x < 42 The quotient of y and twice x is the same as the product of 4 and z.

  9. for multiplication: b and are inverses (b  0) since b · = 1. Properties of Real Numbers: • Identities • for addition: 0 is the identity since a + 0 = a and 0 + a = a. • for multiplication: 1 is the identity since a· 1 = a and 1 · a = a. • Inverses • for addition: a and –a are inverses since a + (-a) = 0.

  10. More Properties of Real Numbers: • Commutative property • of addition: a + b = b + a • of multiplication: a· b = b· a • Associative property • of addition: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) • of multiplication: (a· b) · c = a· (b· c) • Distributive property of multiplication over addition • a(b + c) = ab + ac

  14. Simplifying Algebraic Expressions: The terms of an expression are the addends of the expression (parts separated by + or – signs). Like terms contain the same variables raised to the same powers. To combine like terms, add or subtract their numerical coefficients, then multiply the result by the common variable factors. (Thecoefficientis the number in front of a term.)

  15. 6x2 + 7x2 19xy – 30xy 13xy2 – 7x2y 13x2 -11xy Can’t be combined (since the terms are not like terms) Examples of Combining Terms Terms Before Combining After Combining Terms

  16. Please ask if you have a question about either how to use the software or how to do a homework problem. We’re here to help you! • Warning: It’s a bad idea to get too addicted to the “help me solve this” function, because you won’t have this to help you on quizzes and tests!! • You’re welcome to stay after the class period ends to finish your homework and/or get help from a teacher or TA in the Math TLC open lab next door.

  17. You may now OPENyour LAPTOPS and begin working on the homework assignment. You’re expected to stay and work on your homework for this section until the end of the 55-minute class period. If you have completed (100% score) the homework and want to leave before the end of the period, show the score on your laptop screen to a teacher or TA.
