The origin The Celts(凯尔特人), who lived 2,000 years ago, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts(凯尔特人) believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred(模糊的). On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain(节日名), when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. And people are said to present their food and drinks to the ghost of the dead.
Special games and activities Apple bobbing Divination(占卜) Carving lanterns(刻南瓜灯) Treat or trick ……
Apple bobbing Apples float in a tub or a large basin of water. The participants must use their teeth to remove an apple from the basin.
This is a greeting card, and you can read the words on it. Very interesting. Divination(占卜) Unmarried women were told that if they sat in a darkened room and gazed into a mirror on Halloween night, the face of their future husband would appear in the mirror. However, if they were destined(注定) to die before marriage, a skull(骷髅) would appear. The custom was widespread enough to be commemorated on greeting cards from the late 19th century and early 20th century.
Carving lanterns(刻南瓜灯) More complex carvings are becoming more commonly seen. And the reason why we often see pumpkin lanterns is that North Americans think that pumpkin is both much softer and much larger – making it easier to carve than a turnip.为什么我们见到的大都是南瓜灯呢?主要是因为美国人认为南瓜比萝卜软而且大,更容易刻。 This is a traditional Irish turnip(爱尔兰萝卜) Halloween lantern. Pumpkins are cut out to make holes, often a face, which may be either cheerful, scary, or comical.
Treat or trick The game that children like most.
