What is a political fund? The law requires trade unions to have a political fund if they fund a political party, or campaign to persuade people to vote for a political party (or not for a particular political party.) The EIS operates such a political fund. This allows us to campaign on broad range of issues, even during elections, without the fear of legal action or fines. It also allows us to fund campaigns on matters which are subject of political debate in Scotland (such as smaller class sizes) without fear of legal action or fines. It also allows us to safely fund some EIS work at party political conferences.
The EIS is not affiliated to any political party, and is not aligned to any political party, therefore the EIS Political Fund does not pay into or contribute to any political party.
Importance of a political fund Our political fund is necessary to allow us to campaign and set out information at any time without the fear that a body will allege that what we are doing requires a political fund. This allows us to safely campaign for policies that one or more political parties have or do not have, i.e. for us to seek to influence a range of organisations including political parties. Having a political fund allows us to do this work safely, it gives us a bigger voice.
Operating a political fund How is a political fund financed? A union's political fund is normally financed mainly from contributions by members - the "political levy". If you are full-time, then the amount levied from your annual subscription is £1.80. For part-time and supply teachers it is half this amount.
Political fund ballot The law requires a ballot of the trade union membership every 10 years to maintain a political fund. The next ballot to maintain the EIS Political Fund will open on in October 2017.
Opting-in to a political fund Trade unions must comply with certain requirements in setting up and running such funds and union members have certain rights in relation to these requirements. In particular, no member is obliged to contribute to a union's political fund. Unions must now ensure that new members "opt in", rather than out, of its political fund.
Maintain the EIS Political Fund Your union wants you to vote YES in the political fund ballot so that we can defend your interests more effectively, and campaign for better workplaces, pensions and employment laws.
