  2. What is a conceptual model? • a mental model of how things in our surrounding environment work • based on information received through scientific data and observations • important diagnostic tool, widely used in meteorology

  3. Brief History • meteorological CM’s first appeared in early 1990’s • since then, many have been identified and described in various literature • 1996 – “Manual of Synoptic Satellite Meteorology – Conceptual Models” started by the Austrian Meteorological Institute (ZAMG)
