My research project (ERG App) • To develop a proof of concept Emergency Response Guide (ERG) smartphone application (app) that will provide an alternative way for people to access campus emergency information • ERG is currently on paper • Many people in the U.S. own smartphones
What is an ERG • An Emergency Response Guide for public distribution • Contains basic procedures and contact information for a variety of campus emergencies including: • Natural disasters • Hazardous material incidents • Medical emergencies and major accidents
Smartphone App Benefits • Portability • Many people have smartphones • Internal storage • Automatic updates • Automatic dialing
Smartphone App Concerns • Not everyone has a device • Electricity • Privacy and information security • Different type of development involved
Smartphone Application • May be applicable for other emergency management printed materials • Designs should consider resiliency, privacy and security concerns • May add redundancy and portability when distributed with the paper version ERG
