Gustar • The verb gustar = to be pleasing • in context the English translation would be “to like” • Unlike previously learned verbs that you learned in class, the verb “gustar” doesn’t use Subject Pronoun, but Indirect Object Pronouns.
Indirect object pronouns Me = to me Te = to you Le = to him, her, you (formal) Nos = to us Os = you all (Spain) Les = to them (m,f) you all
Indirect object pronouns + gustar Me gusta (n) = It’s pleasing to meTe gusta (n) = It’s pleasing to you (informal)Le gusta (n) = It’s pleasing to her, him, you (f)Nos gusta (n) = It’s pleasing to usOs gusta (n) = It’s pleasing to you all (Spain)Les gusta (n) = It’s pleasing to them, you all
Use “gusta” when the thing being liked is singular • Use “gustan” when the thing being liked is plural Note: “gusta y gustan” is the conjugation of the verb gustar in the 3rd person singular and plural.
What’s up witth the “n” • Me gusta la falda roja. • Me gustan las faldas rojas. • Te gusta el chocolate • Te gustan los chocolates.
Examples: • Me gustan mis zapatos nuevos.(My new shoes are pleasing to me / I like my new shoes) • Nos gusta nadar los domingos. (Swimming on Sundays is pleasing to us /We like to swim on Sundays)
In order to add clarity or emphasize the person whom we are talking in a sentence you need to use a prepositional phrase.
Prepositional phrase • A mí (As for me)A tí (As for you) • A él, ella, usted (As for him, her, you(formal) • A nosotros (As for us) • A vosotros (As for you all (Spain)) • A ella, ellas ustedes (As for them, you all)
To make it negative A ella no le gusta… A mi no me gusta…
Classwork: translate • She likes to talk with Ana. • I like my blue jacket. • We don’t like to study Spanish. • You like to spend money. • You all like to draw.
The conditional • In Spanish to express “would” use the ending “ía” at the end of the infinitive.
The conditional • Expressing conditional • Would like = gustaria(yo) Me gustaría (n)(tu) Te gustaría (n)(El, ella, usted) Le gustaría (n)(Nosotros) Nos gustaría (n)(Vosotros) Os gustaría (n)Ellos, ellas, uds.) Les gustaría (n)
Examples: • Me gustaríaun café negro, por favor. • Nos gustarían dos naranjas, por favor.
Preposition phrase • Notice how saying “le gustaría” could mean: She would like, he would like, you (formal) would like. • One way to get rid of this ambiguity is adding a prepositional phrase at the beginning of the sentence.
Examples: • This prepositional phrase are also useful to add emphasis. 1) A mí me gustarían los camarones con arroz. 2) A ellos les gustaría una pizza. 3) A nosotros nos trae mas salsa, por favor.
Notice that whenever there is a Subject Pronoun, it can be replace with a name. 1) A Mario le gustaría comer mas queso. 2) A Emilia le trae un café negro, por favor.
Don’t forget the sentence structure • A mi hermana + le + gustaría … • Prepositional phrase + Pronoun + gustaría …
1) As for me, I would like some tacos. 2) As for her, she would like a lemonade. 3) As for us, we would like chicken and rice.
