Ser vs. Estar • The main difference is that estar refers to temporary attributes while ser to permanent or more lasting ones. • The best way would be to think of estar as of Spanish version of present continuous or a word being: • The book is being on the table. Ser/Estar with adjectives • Ser+adjective= what something/one is like • Soy feliz- I am a happy person • Estar+adjective= how someone/thing is… different from the norm… a current condition • Estoy triste- I am sad…. Right now.
Continued • Contento, cansado and enojado are ALWAYS used with estar
