Summary of Paradise Lost • Satan waged a war on God and lost. • The fallen angels built Pandemonium and were discussing if they should stay at war or not. • They resolved to a different plan at revenge by using Earth and man. • At the gates of hell Satan meets his children Sin and Death. They unbar the gates after Satan and Death fight. • He ventures in space until he views the new universe. He found the angel Uriel and in disguise, got into Earth. • God views Satan and prophesies the fall of man. His son, the Messiah, offers to sacrifice himself for them.
Summary of Paradise Lost Cont. • Satan gets to Eden and becomes jealous of Adam and Eve. • Uriel tells his fellow angels, and they apprehend and banish Satan. • God sends Raphael to warn Adam and Eve. He tells them of how Lucifer’s jealousy against Jesus started a war in heaven. • He also speaks of how Jesus forced Satan and his ranks to hell. He tells Adam man was made to replace the fallen angels. • Satan came back to Earth as a serpent and tricked Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. Adam, not wanting to lose Eve, also ate the fruit.
Summary of Paradise Lost Cont. • They lost their innocence and became blaming to each other. • Jesus came and judged them, delaying their deaths. • When Satan returned to Pandemonium, the other angels and he are turned into serpents. • Michael escorts them out of Paradise after showing Adam everything that will happen before the death and resurrection of the Son of God
Character Sketch: Adam • Adam was the first human and man, and was created by God • Adam was the first human to enter the Garden of Eden. • Eve, a creation meant for Adam, was created out of one of Adam's ribs. • Eve then ate a fruit and in order to gain knowledge and in order to remain with Eve Adam ate the fruit as well. • Adam, along with man, was punished for eating the fruit.
Character Sketch: Satan • Satan is also referred to as the devil, and is a fallen angel. • He is vengeful as God disowned him, and to this day he holds anger towards God. • He holds a spear as a weapon. • He has wings as he was once an angel. • Satan shows himself as a snake when he tricks Eve into eating the fruit.
The history behind Paradise Lost • In the seventeenth century, John Milton was a poet and political activist. • He wrote pamphlets and other pieces of writing that went against the Anglican church and King Charles. • In his day Milton's political views were not allowed so when he recorded them on paper he was jailed for some time. • Milton became blind by the time he started writing Paradise Lost in the late 1650's.
