Other Worlds: Dynamic Elements of Magic Realism in Like Water for Chocolate and Chronicle of a Death Foretold. • (HOOK): Symbolic dreamscapes, surreal exaggerations, and the illusion of timeless reality encompass Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold. • (Thesis): Esquivel’s LWFC and Marquez’ Chronicle of a Death Foretold reveal magic realism through the literary elements of dreams, hyperbole, and sense of time. While Like Water for Chocolate expresses a far more dreamlike atmosphere with exaggerated scenes, Chronicle values the supernatural world of dream symbolism and less use of hyperbole. Both novels have a unique sense of time, but while LWFC is more linear, Chronicle promotes a far more sophisticated style of magic realism style by avoiding a chronological plot.
