  2. Early Life • Born on April 16, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio. • His real name is Enrico Nicola Mancini but he changed it to Henry when he got older. • He grew up playing the flute, piano, and piccolo. At age 12 he took up arranging • After high school graduation he enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music, but his studies were interrupted when he was drafted to the Air Force during WWII and worked in the Band. He was hired as a pianist and established musical ties here.

  3. Career Path • He was hired to play in Miller Band where he met his future wife singer, Ginny O’ Connor. They married in 1947 at moved to LA. • In 1952 he joined the Universal studios music department . Over the next six years he contributed to over 100 films. He chose to go independent and left the studio in 1958 • He started working on the television series “Peter Gun” soon after. • He was in high demand and conducted over 600 symphony performances for the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and many more. • In 1966, 1980, and 1984 he performed for the Royal Family

Works continued • He wrote two books called Sounds and Score- A practical guide to Professional Orchestration and his autobiography Did they Mention the Music? • He established musical programs at Juilliard students could benefit from as well as his own place, The Henry Mancini Institute, near his hometown.

Acknowledgements • The American Society of Composers have been awarding the Henry Mancini scholarship to young musicians since 2001 in his honor. • The Henry Mancini Arts Academy was added as an extension to the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center • He also has his own stamp issued April 13, 2004.

  9. Henry’s Life • Henry died on June 14th, 1994. He is survived by his wife and 3 children who continue his legacy and programs. Wife Ginny, Twin daughters Monica and Felice and son Christopher

  10. Listening Guide Pink Panther • 0:00- Music begins with a jazzy one, two, beat and set the tone for the song. It creates a sense of the pink panther walking. • 0:11- Saxophone comes in creating a mysterious sound as if spying and creating the melody and scene for the movie. The piano is playing in the background • 0:44- melody changes, trumpets come in to create a more upbeat sound, drums become more noticeable • 1:12- Drums have a small solo introducing a big section of the song. This is the Climax of the song • 1:16- All instruments come in to create a big bang for the climax • 1:17- Saxophone comes back in setting the tone back to a more jazz theme • 1:27- Saxophone solo comes in.
