  2. LEARNING TARGETS 9 AND 10 Summarize how the 13th through 15th Amendments addressed the aftermath of slavery and the Civil War. Summarize how the 16th through 19th Amendments addressed the calls for reform during the Progressive Era. The Reconstruction Era prompted Amendments 13 through 15 to address the aftermath of slavery and the Civil War. Amendments 16 through 19 responded to calls for reform during the Progressive Era.

AMENDMENTS 13 AND 14 Amendment 13 - Abolished slavery in the United States Conflict over slavery was a primary cause of the American Civil War Ratification of the 13th Amendment required for former Confederate states to re-enter the U.S. Amendments 14 and 15 added to prevent Southern states from curtailing the rights of freedmen - Southern states required to ratify to re-enter the the U.S. Amendment 14 - defined what persons were citizens of the United States and offered protection from state infringements on citizens’ rights

AMENDMENT 15 Amendment 15 extended the right to vote to citizens regardless of race, color or previous condition of servitude gave Congress the power to enact legislation to enforce the right against race-based denials of the vote ignored and circumvented for nearly a century by Southern states through literacy tests and poll taxes

AMENDMENTS 16 AND 17 The Progressive Era - period of political, economic, and social reform in response to problems in the U.S. in the late 1800s Amendment 16 - allowed for a federal income tax Response to concerns over the usage of tariffs by the federal government and distribution of wealth in the country Amendment 17 - direct election of senators by the people Response to concerns over power and influence of political party bosses and business leaders on state legislatures and their selection of senators

AMENDMENTS 18 AND 19 Amendment 18 - prohibited the manufacturing and sale of alcohol Response to concerns that alcohol use led to problems such as poverty and the destruction of family life Amendment 19 - ended the denial of suffrage based upon the sex of a citizen Response to laws in some states that denied women the right to vote
