David Bang Bo Britches Logan Daniels A central processing unit (CPU), also known as a central processor unit, is the hardware within a computer that carries out the instructions of a computer program by performing the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of the system. The term has been in use in the computer industry since the early 1960s. While the form, design, and implementation of CPUs have changed over the course of their history, the fundamental operation of CPUs has remained the same. This list is called an instruction set. Such operations could include adding or subtracting two numbers, comparing numbers, or jumping to a different part of a program. Each one of these basic operations is represented by an opcode which is a specific sequence of bits that is for a particular operation.
