Staff Development Council www.nsdc.com • Writing the CSIP and PD Plan We will only focus on a few highlights from the seminar. This is not the “PD Committee” anymore, but a collective Professional Learning Team. We are working for immediate student impact and training teachers for the future. • Running an Effective Meeting: Pending another seminar…?

  3. Standards Learning: Staff development that improves the learning of all students applies knowledge about human learning and change.

Adult Learning Theory Adults: • Bring knowledge, skills, attitudes • Bring experience • Like to solve problems • Like to apply what they learn to real situations • Like to have choices • Like to share in setting the learning objectives • Have a variety of learning style/preferences • Do best in an environment where they feel safe, accepted, and need feedback • Want and need feedback • Need to have their abilities and achievements honored

  5. Practices Should Include • Standards-based: Speaks for itself. • Job-embedded: No need for staff to leave the building to learn about what they are doing in their classrooms. Use of instructional coaches, helper/instructors. Use of Action Research: teachers try it out on the kid and analyze, modify, change, or delete. • Content Rich: These last two are the best for decision making. • Data-Driven: Test results. MAP AYP (Find things like needs assessments to identify concerns and remedies.)

PD Needs Assessments • Start with Student Needs: Make decisions based on 3 years of data, based on the CSIP goals, then align PD plan. • Determine teacher levels of content and process knowledge in areas of district focus. • Recognize the need for differentiation for teachers as well as for students. • Individual Professional Development Plans: Thoughts on this at the end of the presentation.

  7. Knowledge: Conceptual understanding of information, theories, principles, and research. Attitude: Beliefs about the value of particular information or strategies. Skill: Strategies and processes to apply knowledge. Aspiration: Desire or internal motivation, to engage in a particular practice. Behavior: Consistent application of knowledge and skills. Teachers may need to report on evaluation their results on skills from student achievement as to increases or decreases in achievement. What to Assess

PD Compliance • Standard 6.7: Instructional Design & Practices • Mission/Purpose Statement (PDC) • CSIP Based/Alignment • Needs Assessment • Administrative Consultation • Allocation Determinations • 2 Year Mentoring Plan • Board Approval of PD Plan Annually • Communication Opportunities to Staff • Evaluate Effectiveness • Disseminate plan and end of year report to the Board, administration, and staff.

CSIP Examples • Data to use: MAP, AYP, Curriculum Based Measures, Performance Assessments, Needs Assessments… • Goal/Objective: What the district wants to happen. • Baseline: Determine expectations based on facts. • Strategy: How am I going to do this? • Action Step: State what to do first. [Keep it simple] • Time line: When to implement and run the program. • Responsibility: Teacher/administrator its better to put names not role or title. • Cost Resources: What’s needed people, money, Federal programs Title I or Title II • Professional Development: What do our teachers need to be able to do this. Evaluation: What evidence will I need to show it has happened. Remember to EPEGS (Posting online)

PD Real Goal ExampleThe PD committee doesn’t establish the goals it comes from the CSIP and Prioritize the goals from CSIP. • Data to use: MAP, AYP, Curriculum Based Measures, Performance Assessments, Needs Assessments… • Data Source Reveals ( Lack of District use of Common Assessments) • Goal: 100% of the teachers will use Common Assessments {From CSIP} • Baseline: 20% of teachers will be using assessments, then by 2nd semester 50% of teachers and 100% by the 4th Qtr. • 1st Strategy: To Educate and train teachers on Common Assessments • Action Step: {Keep it Simple} Develop a common Assessment Identifying the GLE’s { Add 2nd Strategy to monitor progress. Next slide} • Time line: Program will start this year and be completed in 4th quarter. • Responsibility: <Teacher Name> [On PD Plan …DP Comm. will have someone get a trainer, set a date to train teachers. • Cost Resources: What’s needed people, money, Federal programs Title I or Title II • Professional Development: What do our teachers need to be able to do this. Remember Evaluation: What evidence will I need to show it has happened.

  13. Additional Thoughts Backward Design: Change from what I’m going to do…to… What is the impact or desired effect we want for the kids. Hopefully I have shown you what I want for the PD committee. CSIP will not just focus on student achievement, but the total district needs. PD will focus on student achievement and impact kids learning. CSIP Has several goals to write around and student achievement is only part of it. CSIP needs follow up analysis and identify what data told us to make a change in CSIP. Just a note on Developing Individual Learning Goals (Handout page 4) Discussion on this if available time.
