Mentoring Circles: Our Experiences in the uk InovaConsultancy: Carolyn Usher
Methodology developed by Inova Consultancy (UK) in 2001 -10 years • Delivered in 11 European Countries • Developed by Occupational Psychologists, Coaches, Human Resources Experts, Organisational Development Consultants & Female Entrepreneurs • Aims to foster self-confidence, prevent isolation, get people connected with other entrepreneurs and increase their knowledge on self-employment
What have we achieved? • Two phases of circles have happened so far - First phase in the UK: March-July 2011 - Second phase in the UK: February-May 2012
Lessons Learnt – Peer Learning • women. “It was great to be able to share what I feel and think of better ways to cope” “I enjoyed meeting the other members, having other viewpoints.” “The best aspect of each session was the emotional involvement of other members” “I really liked working with a supportive and nurturing group” “Listening to others facing similar challenges helped me to reflect on mine.
Lessons Learnt • Value of taking time to reflect and work ON the business rather than just IN the business • Value of sharing experiences amongst similar participants – especially those facing double disadvantage • Importance of flexibility as a facilitator (tools, time, methods of facilitation) • “As a facilitator the Circles really keep you on your toes! You need to be ready to adapt the delivery of tools and content all the time to make sure it meets the needs of EVERY individual learner” EP, Facilitator UK
Case Study: Margaret Rhodes • After 35 years as a Civil Servant, Margaret took a voluntary redundancy in April 2012. She was aware that future employment prospects would not be good for a fifty-something in the current economic climate, so decided to use the opportunity to make some changes in her life and career. • Margaret found out about Mentoring Circles™ for Female Entrepreneurs and decided to join the initiative. Although she didn’t think of herself as a budding ‘entrepreneur’, she thought the opportunity to meet informally with other women in similar situations was worth pursuing, especially to help her shortlist her range of business ideas. • Margaret is now aiming to have a business providing excellent home and pet sitting services to clients within the Derbyshire area.
