Mount St. Helens • Is in Cascade Range and Ring of Fire • Erupted May 18, 1980 at 8:32 A.M. • Elevation is 8,365 feet or 2,550 Miles • A man has fallen into the crater on top of Mount St. Helens (Feb,2010) • It is an active volcano • It is a very well known climber/tourist attraction • Part of Oregon and Washington history
Volcanoes in space • Volcano on Lo ( One of Jupiter’s moons) • Lo has six volcanic vents • Lo Spurts magma 100’s of Miles into space forming shapes of umbrellas • The largest volcano in the solar system is Olympus Mons ( on Mars) • Olympus Mons is three times the height of Mt. Everest • Olympus Mons is Latin for Mt. Olympus
Volcanoes in general • Openings in Earths crust • They are formed when magma gushes up from the mantle and breaks through a weak spot in the Earths crust • There are three types of eruptions ( Hawaiian hotspots, Vesuvian, strombolian) • Three shapes of volcanoes (cinder cones, Basaltic, Shield)
