IB MYP Community Projects Course Developing Mindfulness and Empathy Mrs. Jeske + Mrs. Williams Union Academy
Passion + Community Needs = Project The first two questions we ask our students: • What are your passions, interests, hobbies? • Which community needs, issues, problems do you feel most strongly about? When a student creates a community project through a personal passion to address a need/problem in the world, his/her solution will be authentic and meaningful.
Benefits of Community Projects • Developing mindfulness and empathy • Demonstrating leadership in the community (future: college + career) • Improving their creative-thinking and critical-thinking skills • Creating a real-world solution and taking action • Sustaining a self-directed, semester-long project • Growing in knowledge and developing a deeper understanding of their chosen community need through in-depth investigation and research • Appreciating and understanding how their service-acti/solution makes a difference in the world • Earning 50 hours of community service when project is completed .
Parents Are the Key to Success The most important role a parent plays in the success of his/her child is to be present and involved: • Ask your child what his/her passions are and which issues he/she cares about most. • Ask your child what he/she has learned through the investigation of his/her community need/issue and the progress of his/her project (2 – 3 times a week). • Brainstorm with your child about service-action ideas and best way to approach his/her project...marketing, communicating with organizations/businesses/churches, proposal for action, plan, dates, timeline, etc. • During the "Action" phase, be available for transportation; support; accountability; encouragement; etc.
