Critical Reflection

Our horror short film challenges conventions by setting scenes at night in an urban neighborhood with the tooth fairy as the predator instead of a typical slasher. The film represents the average white family and explores fear of the unknown. Engaging with a young audience, it could be distributed on platforms like Netflix and SyFy. Production skills improved through experimentation with camera angles and actor positioning. Technologies like Adobe Pro and iMovie were integrated for editing, along with online music scores.

  2. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? • Our product uses horror movie conventions by setting the scenes at night, as well as in a stereotypical urban neighborhood. It challenges the conventions by instead of having an average man as the slasher, it is the tooth fairy preying on children. • It represents the average white family as a social group, by having the stereotypical mother saying goodnight to her son. Also, it represents fear of the unknown, as the tooth fairy is shown in the majority of silhouettes, as well as the end, where the tooth fairy has replaced John.

  3. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text? • It engages with a young audience of teenagers to young adults, as it plays on the dark fear of childhood idols that are in a child’s room while sleeping. It is something everyone can relate to, as the tooth fairy has been a childhood whim of most kids. • It could be distributed by being on Netflix, where lots of young adults would see it, as well as being on the SyFy channel, where it would appeal to most of its audience.

  4. How did your production skills develop throughout this project? • My production skills developed by being able to recognize where the camera should be and what angles would work best for certain scenes. Re-filming our video three times, led to the acknowledgment of what looked best. For example, the outdoor scenes in the beginning looked badly in the rough draft, because we moved the camera instead of moving the actor. In the final cut, we had the actor move closer, which led to less unfocusing and better lighting.

  5. How did you integrate technologies in the project? • We integrated technologies by using the Adobe Pro for our rough draft editing, and then for our final draft, due to our unexpected unluckiness with the project and needing to refilm, we used iMovie. Also, we found the music online, and used specific scores to work best with the film.
