Incentive for Program • Parent Tots were graduating and didn’t want to quit coming to a class • Parents were fearful of helping their child • Little formal education • Fear of “doing it wrong” • Minimal English language skills
Goals Of the Program • Broach language barrier • Provide encouragement and confidence building for parents • Promote/encourage parent cooperation in student learning • Provide instruction/modeling for parent skill support • Provide materials for parent/student practice at home • Encourage use of public library
Program Calendar • September through April (2 classes/month) • Approx. 16 weeks (maybe 1 week each in December and March/April) • Class 1: Introduction of program; 3 ways to read (read pictures, read words, retell) • Classes 2- 15 (12): two to three classes each of the remaining target skills • Class 16 (13): Graduation
Program Guidelines • Six Targeted Skills • 3 Ways to Read a Book (pictures, words, retell) • Phonics (relationship between letters and the sounds they represent) • Phonological Awareness (sensitivity to, or explicit awareness of, the phonological structure of words) • Vocabulary Building (meanings and pronunciation of words necessary for communication) • Comprehension (the ability to understand and get meaning from spoken and written language) • Fluency (the ability to read text quickly, accurately, and with proper expression)
Class Format (30-45 min.) • Three Ways to Read parent/child practice (5 min.) • Rational/modeling of target skill (10 min.) • Parent/student practice of targeted skill w/instructor guidance (10 min.) • Distribution of targeted skill “take and make” materials and “little Book” (5 min.) • Book checkout (15 min.)
Materials Needed • Books for parent/child reading as class assembles • Supplies for home use • Skill practice materials for class • Supplies for take and make skill practice • Books for home library

Program Outcome • 50 out of 66 eligible families participated • Mothers, fathers, grandparents • 400 books checked out by students during class library time • 500 books checked out by parents • Parents and kids had a great time!!!! • Everyone learned!!!!
