  1. Week 6 IT16 Person words (1) This teacher led introduction aims to increase awareness of how more words can be built in the same way as compound words but this time by adding ‘person word’ endings (suffixes) to a word. The children are shown how person words can be formed by adding one of three suffixes. The children write their answers on an answer sheet (see next slide) which needs to be printed off and distributed to children before the lesson. For each slide, a picture of a person will appear with a short description of what they do. This includes the stem morpheme (e.g. ‘clean’), and the children have a choice of suffixes (-er, -ist, -ian ) to see if they can select the correct one to make the person word, (e.g. ‘clean’ + ‘er’ = ‘cleaner’). A pencil symbol will appear on the screen to prompt the children to write. When this has been done, feedback appears on screen and the children can see if they have made the correct choice. At the end of the slide-show they will be asked what they notice about when they used ‘-er’ or ‘-ist’. They may begin to notice that ‘er’ is usually added to verbs and ‘-ian’ or ‘-ist’ are usually added to nouns. A slide at the end will help draw attention to this.
