Abate (v): to reduce, to lesson • The rain poured down for a while, then abated. • Abhor (v): to hate, detest • Because he always wound up kicking himself in the head when he tried to play soccer, Oswald began to abhor the sport. • Abscond (v): to sneak away and hide • In the confusion, the spy absconded into the night with the secret plans. • Abstain (v): to freely choose not to commit an action • Everyone demanded that he wear a black tie instead of a navy tie, but he didn’t want to, so he abstained. • Accede (v): To agree • When the class asked the teacher to go outside instead of learn boring grammar, they were surprised when she acceded to their request.
Acquiesce (v): to agree without protesting • Mr. Smith acquiesced and went in side when his wife called him to dinner. • Adhere (v): 1.to stick to something, 2.to follow something devoutly • 1. We adhered the poster to the wall. • 2. He adhered to the dictates of his religion without question. • Admonish (v): to caution, criticize, reprove • Joe’s mother admonished him for not completing all his chores like he was told to do before he went to his friend’s house. • Adverse (adj): antagonistic, unfavorable, dangerous • Because of adverse conditions, the hikers decided to climb the mountain Tuesday instead of Monday. • Advocate: 1. (v) to argue in favor of something 2. (n) a person who argues in favor of something • 1. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. advocated for equal rights for all U.S. citizens during the Civil Rights Movement. • 2. You parents are your best advocates for your success in life.
