Koch - factors • War: Franco-Prussian War, 1870-1 turned the two into rivals • Technology: had a well-equipped laboratory like Pasteur; used photography to record bacteria; grew bacteria on petri dishes (and potatoes!); used dyes to identify bacteria, e.g. TB; microscope • Individual genius: first to prove an individual bacterium caused disease - Anthrax • Chance • Other factors?
