Causes of the Crusades • The Turks rose in power • Took over Jerusalem (Holy Land) • Attacked Christian pilgrims and then turned them away from Jerusalem • Church wanted to get Holy Land back • Because Holy • And to control trade routes between Africa, Asia, and Europe
One of the First Crusades • Peter the Hermit and the People’s Crusade • Peter was a small, ordinary man • Gathered an army of common people • Peter was not good at organizing such a large group of people • Food became scarce • Crusaders looted towns • Many people died and others were taken prisoner
One of the First Crusades, cont. • Peter’s army was very weak • Peter waited for an army of knights • His army rebelled, got attacked, only a small part survived • Last of Peter’s army and knights captured Jerusalem in 1099 • Killed 10,000 Muslim, Christian, and Jewish inhabitants
Later Crusades • Christians set up 4 kingdoms in Palestine • Muslims made repeated attacks • Christians launched more Crusades to keep control of region • Strong Muslim leader, Saladin, rose to power • Kept holy city open to Christians for pilgrimages
Results of the Crusades • Trade increased and made use of money more common • Feudalism grew weaker • Towns became more important
