Abraham Lincoln: The Civil War By Abel Simon
Historical Event The Civil War was a war between the North and South that started in 1861 and lasted until the last shot was fired on June, 1865. In this war the Confederate States of America fought against the Federal Government, also known as The Union.
Background to The Crisis After the election of Abraham Lincoln, 11 southern slaves states promptly withdrew from the United States and created the Confederate States of America. The 25 states that were left decided to support The Union. The Confederate States then proceeded to attack Fort Sumter in South Carolina, starting the Civil War.
Why Did The Southern Slave States Withdraw? The 11 Southern Slave States withdrew from the rest of The United States, because of Lincolns presidency. Lincoln was against slavery, and the slave states were fearful that he would put an end to slavery. Because their economy was so heavily reliant on slavery, ending it would be one of the worst things that could happen to them. Thus, explaining why they withdrew from the rest of The United States and attacked Fort Sumter.
Decisions Available to The President • Take action immediately, and fight against the Confederate States. Victory would be easy to achieve because of your army size compared to theirs. • Negotiate a solution, you want to avoid war at all costs. Negotiation is a beyond reasonable choice, considering you have an army twice as large as the Confederate States, and can negotiate from a position of power.
Action Taken By The President Abraham Lincoln decided to fight against the Confederate States. He may not have wanted to keep the Confederates around, knowing that they were against him and could rebel at any time. This would also cause problems should he decide to end slavery.
The Result Abraham Lincoln and The Union achieved victory in The Civil War. Afterwards, slavery was abolished and The Reconstruction Era Began. The end of slavery generally sat well with the public, except for the 11 slave states. It is also one of the reasons Abraham Lincoln is acknowledged as such a great president.
Hindsight Because Abraham Lincoln defeated the Confederates slavery was abolished in the remaining 11 states that still supported it. If he had not fought against the Confederate States and chose to negotiate instead, slavery may not have ended properly. I agree with Lincolns decision and would have taken the same course of action.
