Information. • On the day of April 14,1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head by John W. Booth, he died the next day due to injury. • The South's Early Rejoice: When word reached the Confederacy, rejoice and cheer were brought upon in military camps all over, but as the Unions attacks grew in strength and ferocity, they soon found out that Abraham could have helped them in the long run.
Further Information. • There are many different conspiracy theories behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, but many consider the, “ Standard ,” theory to be the most accurate. • The Standard theory states that John W. Booth was in contact with leaders of the Confederacy, and he was to assassinate the president in an attempt to have the South rise again. • A second theory suggests that not only Lincoln was being targeted that day, but many members of his cabinet, and the Vice President. • The Dream: Three nights before the assassination, Lincoln recorded in his journal the dream he had of his own assassination. “ There I met with a sickening surprise. Before me was a catafalque, on which rested a corpse wrapped in funeral vestments. Around it were stationed soldiers acting as guards; and there was a throng of people , gazing mournfully upon the corpse, who’s face was covered, others weeping pitifully. ‘ who is dead in the Whitehouse?’ I demanded of one of the soldiers, ‘ The President.’
