10. Circadian means “about a day”
This rhythm is controlled by secretions of a specific set of cells (suprachiasmatic nucleus SCN) found in the hypothalamus.
Light receptors in the retina linked to the hypothalamus. These receptors feed information to the pineal gland which secrets melatonin during the night. During the day melatonin secretion is inhibited
The hypothalamus also triggers a neuroendocrine response which acts on the pituitary gland. This pathway profoundly influences other parts of the body including endocrine, immune, cardiovascular and urinary systems. Hormones influenced by circadian rhythm are growth hormone, prolactin and testosterone.
