The End of the 101 Ranch • The 101 Ranch was a victim of the Great Depression and family tragedies. Everything was auctioned off, removed and torn down during the 1930’s. All of the land was sold by 1943. • Nothing is there today. This memorial is in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

Oil Industry in Oklahoma History • Oklahoma’s first commercial oil well was called the Nellie Johnstone #1. It was located near Bartlesville. • Oklahoma became the number one producer of oil in the U.S. on Nov. 16, 1907. • Aaron Drumright opened the Cushing- Drumright oil field in 1912. It produced 20% of all U.S. oil in 1919 and 3% of world production.

Oil Boom and Bust • Oil and natural gas has always been part of Oklahoma’s economy. • It has gone through boom times (good prices, good demand, lots of jobs) and always followed with busts (low prices, low demand, high unemployment). • This has cause our state economy to go through the same cycles many times. It has hurt many “boom” towns because many people left. • Today, Oklahoma is much more diversified .
Dust Bowl: The Dirty 30’s • State affected by the Dust Bowl were, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado • Only NW Oklahoma was in the worst of the DB • Severe Drought: 1936 and 1937 parts of PH receieved NO rainfall. • Human causes: The Great Plowup and poor conservation practices, • Black Sunday: April 14, 1935 was the worst dust storm in state history. • Okies- thousands moved west on Route 66
