Types of Plants • Algae • Coral – Made of single celled organisms called polyp.
Climate • Coral reefs develop in shallow warm waters close to land and mostly in tropical areas. • The Great Barrier Reef is the larges coral reef and is located off the coast of NE Australia.
People that live near coral reefs • Coral reefs are located near the equator. • People in North America, South America, Africa, Australia, and parts of Asia all live in an environment with coral reefs.
Ecological Concerns • Due to pollutants and other harmful changes in the oceans Coral reefs are being destroyed. • Bleaching which is caused by pollutants, destroys the food that the polyps live on. • Pollutants also cause diseases which kill the polyps.
