  2. Geological Description • Coral reefs are like the rainforest of the ocean, full of life and home to about 25% of the marine species. • Coral reefs act like barriers to keep heavy tides from hitting the shore.

  4. Types of Plants • Algae • Coral – Made of single celled organisms called polyp.

  5. Climate • Coral reefs develop in shallow warm waters close to land and mostly in tropical areas. • The Great Barrier Reef is the larges coral reef and is located off the coast of NE Australia.

  6. People that live near coral reefs • Coral reefs are located near the equator. • People in North America, South America, Africa, Australia, and parts of Asia all live in an environment with coral reefs.

  7. Ecological Concerns • Due to pollutants and other harmful changes in the oceans Coral reefs are being destroyed. • Bleaching which is caused by pollutants, destroys the food that the polyps live on. • Pollutants also cause diseases which kill the polyps.
