  1. Unit 5 Trouble With Great Britain Taxation without Representation

  2. Great Britain in Debt • Great Britain placed taxes on the colonists to pay for the French and Indian War • The King and Parliament believed it was their right to tax the colonists • Colonists believed they should have a voice in Parliament and a vote on the taxes

  3. Stamp Act • Placed a tax on paper—legal documents, newspapers, • Colonists protested “No taxation without representation” because colonists did not have representatives in Parliament • Colonists wanted their colonial assemblies to have the right to pass taxes • Colonists organized a Stamp Act Congress and a boycott on British goods that led to the repeal (get rid of) of the Stamp Act

  4. Why did the colonists have a problem with the Stamp Act?

  5. The Townshend Acts • The British then imposed tax on imported goods: • Paint • Paper • Tea • Colonist boycotted and the tax was lifted, except on tea

  6. What was the result of the boycott of the Townshend Acts?

  7. The Tea Act • The Tea Act was not a tax • The Tea Act stated that the British East India Company was the only company allowed to sell tea to the colonies • The East India Tea Company had financial problems and Parliament wanted to help the company • In Boston they threw the tea overboard during the Boston Tea Party to protest

  8. The Tea Act was NOT a tax on tea. What did the Tea Act do? • Why would colonists be against the Tea Act?

  9. Sons and Daughters of Liberty

  10. Reasons to Protest • Colonist were upset over taxes Britain placed on them—Sugar Act, Stamp Act • Samuel Adams started the Sons of Liberty in Boston, Massachusetts • The Sons of Liberty helped organize people and protests

  11. Acts of the Sons of Liberty • Dumped tea into Boston Harbor to protest Tea Act—aka Boston Tea Party • Tarred and feathered tax collectors • Organized protests and sent delegates (representatives) to the Stamp Act Congress, which helped get the tax repealed (removed)

  12. Protests in Charles Town • Sons of Liberty formed groups all over colonies, including SC • The Charles Town Sons of Liberty was formed by Christopher Gadsen • Wealthy merchant in Charles Town • One of first to speak out against taxation • Delegate at the Stamp Act Congress

  13. Propaganda

  14. Review • Why did Britain tax the colonies? • To help pay war debt from French and Indian War • The Stamp Act placed a tax on what goods? • Paper-newspapers, legal documents, playing cards • What slogan was a response to the Stamp Act? • “No taxation without representation” • The Townshend Acts/Townshend Duties placed a tax on what goods? • Imported goods: paint, paper, tea

  15. Review • What was the result of the colonist boycott of the Townshend Act? • Tax removed on everything EXCEPT tea • Was the Tea Act a tax on tea? • No, allowed ONLY the East India Tea Company to sell tea to colonies • Who founded the Sons of Liberty in Massachusetts? • Samuel Adams • What were they responsible for doing? • Organizing people and protest against the British

  16. Review • What were two things the Sons of Liberty were known for doing? • Boston Tea Party and tarring and feathering tax collectors • Christopher Gadsen of SC was responsible for____________? • Founding the Charles Town Sons of Liberty

  17. Daughters of Liberty • Women helped protest Britain just like men • Protested British goods by: • Sewing blankets and clothing so colonist wouldn’t need to buy British cloth

  18. Intolerable Acts • Parliaments response to the Boston Tea Party • The Intolerable Acts: • Closed Boston Harbor to shipping • Made legislature an appointed body • Suspended town meetings • Colonist responded by sending delegates to the First Continental Congress to address the Intolerable Acts

  19. Quick Write • Most people who are happy with the services provided by their government are content and want to keep things just like they are. People who are not want change. Question: • Today in our community, how do we express these feelings of content or discontent? Compare this to the way the colonist expressed their discontent with Britain.

  20. Declaration of Independence • After several years of protest and years of debate, the colonist decided it was time to break away from Great Britain • Met in Philadelphia, PA to sign the Declaration of Independence • It was based on the ideas of John Locke • Men are created equal • People have the right to life, liberty, and finding happiness • Right to break away from a government that does not protect them

  21. SC Signers of the Declaration • Four men from SC signed the Declaration • They were wealthy planters • All fought with SC militia during war and served in government after the war

  22. Arthur Middleton Edward Rutledge • Thomas Lynch Jr. Thomas Heyward Jr
