The last young man called Soaring Eagle went up the mountain, but he didn’t come back. After six days the people started to say that something must have happened to him. Chief Sky said, “ We will wait one more day.” On the seventh day, Soaring Eagle came back with his feet bleeding, his clothes cut. He held nothing in his hands. Chief Sky removed his robe and put it on Soaring Eagle’s cut clothes. He said, “You shall be our next chief, Soaring Eagle. You will lead our people and help those in need. You will be our chief and help us climb yonder mountain.” 7 4
Soaring Eagle spoke softly to Chief Sky. He said, “ I went up the mountain and saw a place with shiny stones and I saw the herbs, but I remembered you said go to the top of the mountain. The path was very rough and I he have nothing in my hands, but I brought back a story from the top of the mountain.” He said that from the top, he saw a smoke signal coming from the farthest mountain. The signal said, “We are dying. Come and help us.” Soaring Eagle said,” Chief Sky, we need to go to them. They are in trouble.” Chief Sky stood in front of his people and said,” We need a leader who went to the top of the mountain. We need a leader who looked at other people who are in need.” 6 5
