1 MOUNTAIN MAN – a fur trader or trapper who lived in the West prior to regular settlement
2 JIM BECKWOURTH – former slave who became a mountain man, discovered a mountain pass into present day northern California

3 Mountain men were the first to set up trails through the mountains and map the territory
4 LAND SPECULATION – buying cheap land in hopes that it will become more valuable later
5 SANTA FE TRAIL – a trail which lead from Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico Moved people and goods over a 800 mile route
6 OREGON TRAIL – commonly used trail that led from Independence, Missouri to Oregon Territory
7 People went west to Oregon for cheap land in an area that was reportedly very rich for crops
8 WAGON TRAINS – groups of travelers on the trail who cooperate, makes it less dangerous, set up leaders and rules
9 MORMONS – members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints
10 The Mormons moved west because of continued difficulties with members of other religions – they had moved from Illinois because of problems
11 BRIGHAM YOUNG- leader of the Mormons that led them west to start a new settlement
