What are we covering this year? • First Nine Weeks – short stories • Second Nine Weeks – Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor • Third Nine Weeks – The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton • Fourth Nine Weeks – The Giver by Lois Lowry
What is SQUIRT? • Sustained • Quiet • Uninterrupted • Independent • Reading • Time • 20-25 minutes a day of sustained silent reading • Class competition • Each class has chosen a color. • As they finish reading a book, they write on a colored sticky note their name, the book title and author, and if they would recommend it (yes or no).
How will my child be graded? • A – 100-93 • B – 92 - 85 • C – 84 - 75 • D – 74 - 67 • F – 66 - 0 • Classwork, tests/quizzes – 70% • Homework – 10% • Quarter Exams – 20% Weekly grades: Bellringer and Writing Prompt – 10 pts. DLT check – 5 points Reading Log – 50 points
What is ZAP? • Zeroes Aren’t Permitted • A program designed to eliminate zeroes from the gradebook with multiple opportunities to complete the assignment. • 1st – alternative due date • 2nd – complete assignment during P.E. by coming to teacher • 3rd – ZAP hall after school
What does my child do everyday? • 1st – write DLT in their agendas • 2nd – answer Bellringer in binder • 3rd – read SQUIRT for 20-25 minutes followed by a log (worth 50 pts. a week) • 4th – answer a writing prompt in binder • 5th – 3 minute break • 6th - daily lesson
Tardiness: • 1st – warning • 2nd – parent contact • 3rd – detention • 4th – office referral What are the classroom expectations? • Students should be prepared with materials. • Students should show respect to peers and faculty. • Students should be quiet and attentive during class. • Students should participate in class discussions. • Warning • Essay/before school detention • After school detention with parent contact • Office referral
