“Each year, the typical American family throws out 2,460 pounds of paper, 540 pounds of metals, 480 pounds of glass and 480 pounds of food scraps.
Why I Chose My Topic • Should the government or businesses handle recycling efforts? • My dad works as a regional manager for Sonoco Recycling • He tells me his opinions on how the government works and I wanted to see if he was right
Research I Found • Recycling is incredibly underdeveloped in America, and we don’t recycle near as much as we potentially could
Research I Found • Aluminum, paper, and glass are the most profitable recyclables because they save the most energy and can be recyclable repeatedly
Research I Found • There are 4 necessary requirements to put a recycling program into place: an adequate source of recyclables, a system to extract these products from waste, a nearby factory to process these recyclables, and a demand for recycled products.
Research I Found • Businesses can recycle wastes way more efficiently than our government can
Obstacles I overcame • I had trouble finding information that wasn’t outdated • This was the longest paper I’d ever had to write
Successes I had • I finished all my work on time • I spread out the work over a long period of time
Link between Research and Product • I managed the recycling effort for the annual St. Anne's international Food Festival so that I could learn more about how a recycling business runs.
Reflection • I learned that I like to boss people around • I think this will help me interact with people in the future
