What is Relay Recess? • It is part of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life global event, tailored specifically for an elementary school. • An opportunity to unite students, school personnel, parents with the American Cancer Society and the Relay community to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays • Relay Recess is unique and flexible to fit any school culture • Relay Recess engages students to: • be educated on cancer prevention • fundraise to help others in the community • be more physically active
Why Relay Recess? • A Character-building, community service and leadership activity. • Students work alongside adult coordinators • Students honor those who have had cancer • Students connect with the local community Relay For Life • Students will continue to have leadership and volunteer opportunities – middle school, high school and college - with Relay For Life • Creating a healthier generation • Students will be engaged in fun activities about the benefits of nutrition, physical activity, sun safety, and tobacco prevention • Relay Recess spotlights childhood nutrition because it has been proven that obesity will be as likely to cause cancer as tobacco for the students of today. • Most smokers start smoking by the time they leave grade school.
Why Relay Recess? • Cancer touches everyone • 97% of cancer impacts adults • 3% of cancer impacts children • A world with less cancer and more birthdays means… • More parents and grandparents will see their children grow-up. • Childhood cancer survival rate will continue to climb beyond 97%. • American Cancer Society • The Society’s goal is to impact all cancers. • Has been involved in every major advancement in the fight against cancer. • Funded more research Nobel Prize winners (46) than all other non-profits combined.
