  2. EU R&D and Innovation funded programmes: FP7 (7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development ) Launched in 2007 and will run until the end of 2013. The programme has a total budget of over €50 billion. This money is being spent to co-finance research, technological development, innovation and demonstration projects.Grants are determined on the basis of calls for proposals and a peer review process, which are highly competitive. Horizon 2020 Is the FP7 successor programme and will start in 2014. It has an estimated budget of € 80 billion withsimplified rules. Horizon 2020 will tackle societal challenges by helping to bridge the gap between research and the market by, for example, helping innovative enterprise to develop their technological breakthroughs into viable products with real commercial potential. It has market-driven approach.

Why to engage in EU R&D and innovation funding? • To access to the knowledge and expertise of top-class researchers and also other companies undertaking research in the same areas • To help financing a particular project or idea • Widen field of expertise / open new areas of research • Exposure to best practice at EU and International level • EU projects can open new doors and market opportunities

  5. Benefits of North/South collaboration • No language barrier • Proximity for meetings and interaction, with ease of mobility of people and ideas • Close working relationship of agencies (INI and EI) • Strong collaborative offering to additional EU partners

  6. North/South collaboration in FP7 • The largest areas of successful N/S activity in FP7 are AgriFood, ICT, Marie Curie, Res4SME, Security, Health, and NMP. • Total funding across these thematic areas ranges between €2.5m - €11.8m.

What is funded through FP7 or Horizon 2020?- Some examples of projects: ENVIRONMENT PROJECTS Water purification projects such as AQUA-PULSE: water purification solution based on high-brightness UV Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and a photocatalysis method. (partners: Epi-light (SME), University of Ulster, University College Cork) Total cost: EUR 1 415 933EU contribution: EUR 1 117 218 Waste management solutions such as GASPRO-BIO-WAST: development of new laboratory gasification process analyzer to optimise current processes of existing organic waste and bio mass. (partners: 7 International partners and NI SME: conversion and resource evaluation Ltd) Total cost: EUR 1 500 695EU contribution: EUR 1 157 024

Facilitating partner identification for collaborative projects- with the Research Connections Webtool An interactive map and a searchable database where users can quickly identify companies, academic institutions and other organisations in Ireland and Northern Ireland involved in FP7 projects and in InterTradeIreland’s Fusion and Innova programmes.

Helping to find the right partners for your FP7 projects by: Publishing your partner requests on our EU notice board Supporting you in the development and establishment of partnerships with N/S partners- through the cross border collaboration voucherwhich covers travel & accommodation costs for up to £500 when meeting cross-border partners.

Facilitating contact with European partners and EU institutions Our EU travel schemeoffers financial support to cross-border partners attending FP7/Horizon 2020 related events in Europe or consortium meetings of FP7 projects. £350/€437 Support in the of FP7/Horizon 2020 application processes We work closely with Enterprise Ireland and Invest NI and can link you up with the FP7 National Contact Points in Ireland and with the new Network of National Contact Points in Northern Ireland.

  12. Providing relevant information and advice on FP7 and Horizon 2020 matters Relevant events: workshops, networking sessions, conferences. FP7 dedicated website with relevant links and information on the supports available on the island as well as useful information on FP7. http://www.intertradeireland.com/fp7support/ FP7 Update Newsletter with over 600 subscribers . It provides information on events and FP7 related news.
