  3. What Seneca has to offer… • Location (2 campuses in York Region, 2 campuses in North York) • Broad Range of Programs that cover all areas of college education and… • …unique programs not found at all other colleges (ex: BCD, BTR, Aviation, Underwater Skills)

  4. Seneca Disability Services • Counsellors -accommodations, advocacy, support, bursary funding • Learning Strategist/Assistive Technologist -study skills, time management, organization, assistive technology training • Psycho-educational Clinic -updated psycho-educational reports

  5. Typical Accommodations for Students with LD • Test accommodations: -quiet room, extra time, use of computer, specialized software, scribes, readers • Additional time for assignments/projects • Access to assistive technology for use in classroom or at home (Dragon, Kurzweil, Inspiration etc.) • Access to e-books • Tutoring and note taking • Reduced Course Load

  6. Differences Between High School and College Disability Services • You are responsible for seeking out services you require (see handout) • No modification of program

  7. Transitional Services • Summer Transition Program for Students with Disabilities • One on one appointment(s) with Disability Counsellors available over the summer • Campus/Program Orientation • SMILE Mentoring Program • Success at Seneca (Faculty/staff coaches) • First Year Experience Guide

Financial Aid • Entrance Scholarships (automatically considered) • OSAP (government loan program) -Self identify as having a disability to receive: • automatic $2000 grant/year • access to Bursary for Students with Disabilities (up to $10,000 for specific needs ex: AT) • Tuition Bursary (apply through SIRIS after accepted) For more info: Financial Aid/OSAP websites listed in handout

  9. Additional Services • General Counselling (personal, academic, career) • Tutoring • Student Services (Employment Counselling, Clubs, Student federation, Housing…etc) • Seneca Health Centre (GPs, Psychiatrist, Nurses) • Athletics and Recreation

Get Ready for Success at Seneca Students: • Start preparing early (see checklist) • Be self aware (skills, strengths, interests…) and make informed choice for school and program • Be ready to take on more responsibility for managing your education and disability • Get connected…make regular apts. with your Disability Counsellor

Get Ready for Success at Seneca Parents: • Help with self assessment/research/application process • Keep an open mind; many options available • Become aware of differences between high school and post secondary systems • Stay interested and connected but help son/daughter take ownership for managing disability and academics

  12. What if I don’t get in/feel ready yet? Upgrading: • Upgrade marks in high school • Academic upgrading courses/certificate • Pre-Health (for BScN and PN requirements) Not sure about next step: • Continuing Education • General Arts Program/Pre-Media Studies
