Demonstration of Chaotic SolitonsMingzhong Wu, Colorado State University, DMR 0906489 Chaos and solitons are two important branches of nonlinear science. Usually chaos and solitons are considered to exist in opposite physical regimes and to have nothing to do with each other; they present two unconnected aspects of nonlinear dynamics. Solitons that show chaotic behavior were demonstrated, both experimentally and numerically, for nonlinear spin waves in magnetic thin film-based active feedback ring systems. Demonstration of Chaotic SolitonsMingzhong Wu, Colorado State University, DMR 0906489 • The Colorado State University (CSU) and Colorado School of Mines (CSM) groups held five joint group meetings to discuss project progress and make research plans. • Justin Anderson (graduate student), Rachel Ryan (undergraduate), and Nathan Eddy (undergraduate) in the CSM theory group visited the CSU experiment group and participated on spin-wave experiments for two weeks. • Zihui Wang (graduate student) in the CSU experiment group had three visits to the CSM theory group and learned numerical simulation techniques. • Graduate students had presented the results from this project in several conferences. The PI and co-PI had given a number of talks in university colloquia and international conferences. • The PI and co-PI both taught each other’s courses for a week on the topics of nonlinear and Hamiltonian dynamics, respectively, in the context of junior level classical mechanics at each other’s universities. • A number of laboratory tours had been given to K-12 visitors.
