The Corollary Statement Engineering builds the foundation for a better future The complex challenges facing 21st century society will require professional engineers to advance their technical excellence and professional leadership in order to continue to protect the public and improve its quality of life. The engineering education of the present—a four-year undergraduate degree—will not be sufficient to prepare licensed professional engineers for those future responsibilities.

What can be achieved? Engineering builds the foundation for a better future • Raising the bar for civil engineering will: • Build leaders to influence infrastructure renewal • Create a higher-level & recognizedprofessional • Help CEs manage & communicate the risks involved in society's infrastructure choices • Provide breadth for leadershipin sustainability • Prepare CEs as leaders • Attract more great, innovative future leaders into the profession
The Change Management Problem The BOK has experienced near-continuous change since 2003. In a dynamic world, we should expect continuous change in any professional BOK. Accreditation Criteria should be consistent with BOK outcomes. Frequent or unsynchronized changes to BOK and Accreditation Criteria can be disruptive.
The Change Management Plan • Implement BOK updates and revisions to CE Program Criteria on a regular, predictable schedule. • Use a fixed 8-year cycle: • (CHANGE CYCLE) > (6 YR ACCREDITATION CYCLE) • Different programs implement new Criteria • Continue to recognize inherent differences between BOK and Accreditation Criteria: • BOK – ambitious, comprehensive, future-oriented • Criteria – minimum standard, narrower in scope, applicable now, reasonably attainable
Implications Initiate CE Program Criteria development process in late 2012. No new CE Program Criteria before 2016. May be influenced by ongoing deliberations on Criterion 3 (General Criteria) No major changes to BOK before 2018.
