Clouds:If we integrate Studio Habits of Mind into Science and Literacy Lessons, which are aligned with Visual Arts Lessons, will students’ engagement and persistence and observation skills increase?
Teacher Narrative • I took this opportunity to integrate the Arts into the core subject areas, Literacy, Social Sciences and Science using the Studio Habits of Mind. The SHOM are used to support critical thinking skills, increase observation skills and encourage students and teachers to use the arts across the curriculum. • I have regularly implemented the arts across the curriculum and used core subjects in the arts to increase student achievement, skills and knowledge. The difference with using SHOM has been that I am more focused in my teaching, making sure to explain vocabulary and implement the SHOM more explicitly in my teaching. I have used the Project Approach and Reggio principles to increase student engagement and to build conceptual knowledge using students preconceptions through the Constructivist Approach. The SHOM has helped me communicate the importance of art skills to support student engagement, increase observational skills and increase content knowledge.
