Inspiration & Innovation Ten Effective Counseling Practices from the College Board’s Inspiration Award Schools Part II: Designing an Inspiration and Innovation study in your school!
What does “Inspiration and Innovation” give school counselors? • A way to develop an “Inspiration & Innovation” study in • your school • A tool to demonstrate how data can be used to inform and document continuous growth in building a strong college-going culture in your school
In Part I we learned that three significant data sets were used to study the six schools. These data sets are: • Data Set 1: Participation in rigorous curricula, such as the Advanced Placement Program® (AP) • Data Set 2: The percentage of students participating in college- preparatory course work • Data Set 3: The percentage of students accepted to 2- or 4-year institutions of higher education “Inspiration” Now let’s examine the contents of each data set. Measure of Improvement
Purpose • The purpose of Part II is to assist school counselors in designing an Inspiration and Innovation study in their school. This process is for all high school counselors, even those whose school may not qualify to be an Inspiration School under the eligibility requirements. • Part II guides school counselors through a data collection, analysis, reflection and planning process using the same data sets schools use to apply to the College Board Inspiration School Award Program. • Through this process, school counselors can position themselves to be leaders and advocates on the schools leadership team and engage in decision-making and problem solving on a whole school level. This process can also help school counselors align their work and the initiatives of their program with the school improvement plan and positively impact the teaching and learning process in their school. Content • There are four .pdf documents in Part II. The first three represent the three data sets outlined in the PowerPoint and have corresponding data dialogue or guiding questions documents. The data dialogue will assist you in taking a deeper look at the data and help move your school toward a state of equity. • School counselors can examine the data dialogue questions individually, as a team of counselors or, as part of their participation on the school’s leadership team. • The fourth document Next Steps: Making a Plan using your Inspiration & Innovation study, offers guidelines that counselors in all schools can use as they share their learning with their school leadership team to (1) determine their schools eligibility and readiness to apply to become an Inspiration School and/or (2) inform, guide and document the school’s progress toward establishing and maintaining a strong, equity focused college-going culture.
