Warm-up Brain Conflict
Right side - identifies the color • Left side - identifies the word • This conflictin information processing must be sorted – so the process becomes slower
Atoms • Atoms make up all of the elements • They contain sub-atomic particles theproton + theelectron _ theneutron
Mercury Hg Iron Fe
Metals are shiny • Good electrical conductors • Ductile (can be pulled into a wire) • Malleable (able to be hammered) • They are the largest group of elements
Carbon C Sulfur S
Non-metals are dull in appearance • They are poor electrical conductors • They are brittle and break if hammered
Silicon Si Germanium Ge
They have properties of both a metal & non-metal • Used in the computer industry because of these unique capabilities
The Valence Electrons A Better Look
Valence means “strength” • The valence shell is the outermost shell • This shell holds the reactive electrons • These are the guys that get involved in chemical reactions • These outer electrons are called the valence electrons
1 4 7 How many valence electrons ?
Lewis dots are used to represent valence electrons • They are placed in groups of 1 or 2 electrons on the appropriate four sides of an element 8 electrons means a full valence shell
Lithium has 3 electrons but only 1 is a valence electron – as shown
Beryllium has 4 electrons but only 2 are valence electrons
Five types: 1. Synthesis 2. Decomposition 3. Single Replacement 4. Double Replacement 5. Combustion
Synthesis Tw0 or more substances that combine and synthesize a new compound H2+ O2H2O2 C + 2 H2CH4
Decompositon– opposite of synthesis Compound is decomposedinto two or more simpler substances 2 H2O 2H2 + O2 2 Ag2O 4 Ag + O2
