  1. GCSE Separate Sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics St. Paul’s Science Department Route A.

  2. What can you achieve at GCSE Science In St. Paul’s? • The SEPARATE SCIENCES is no longer an “option”. • This is where ASTRONOMY comes in (more to follow). • All Route A pupils are doing this. • For reference this is OCR Gateway in Biology B; Chemistry B and Physics B.

  3. We are a strong year group • Work on GCSE has already started. Pupils are rising to this extra challenge. • The Year 9 exams in May will be internal and will assess the progress that pupils have made in all three sciences. • So exactly how does the course map out over three years instead of two?

  4. The layout of the course

  5. No more modular exams....so no more retakes. All of the exams are at the end of the course and this starts in June 2014. (Michael Gove)

  6. Gateway Separate Sciences Gateway Suite SO THERE ARE SIX EXAMS (two in each science) to be sat in June 2014.

  7. How do we ensure success: planning ahead. • The concepts and skill levels do increase from Unit 1 to Unit 6. • This helps when one considers how to plan for revision of three years work. • The internal assessment process will also cater for this. (from June 11 – 2 assessments in each of B,C,P per half term) • We will finish courses early to allow for ample revision time. (early changeovers in June)

  8. How do we ensure success: resources • An online textbook will be published through the new Learning Gateway (April at the latest). • Until then, textbooks are being made available in lessons. • Any independent study tasks do come with source material or suggested websites. • Each scientific subject will provide pupils with a revision guide that covers Units 1 to 6 and a workbook with tasks and practice questions. • These will be used in lessons but can be taken home for exam leave or work over a school holiday. OCR B; “Collins Education/Letts – Lonsdale”

  9. Gateway ScienceControlled AssessmentTask (CAT)for GCSE Science: 25% • One task, common topic, in three parts Part 1 – Research and collecting secondary data. Part 2 – Planning and collecting primary data Part 3 – Analysis and Evaluation • Candidates answer part 3 in a structured booklet in controlled conditions. One of these will be done in each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They will be staggered over the next two years so that they are not all done at the same time.

  10. How do lessons in Science support this skill-base?
