Astro-Chile/Tucson • Welcome to Safford Engineering/Technology Magnet Middle School’s website! As you can tell from our school name, our magnet focus is engineering and technology. As part of Tucson Unified School District’s magnet program, Safford students come to Safford from all over the school district as well as from neighborhood feeder schools. Ms. Ross Principal
We have been doing these things in the past few weeks Worked with our teacher and peers, using the Remote Sensing Lab packet, we have worked as: - class periods - small groups - individuals at school and at home Identify satellite pictures – using scale, true color vs. false color imaging, and Tucson vs. La Serena images Identification of Landmarks – local and in La Serena Revisit the Metric System of Measurement - What is a city block? What is a pixel? - I think I can see my house! Relief – vertical vs. horizontal - the importance of color and shadow Infrared Color? What does black mean? What does white mean?? What does purple mean? What does blue mean? What does green means? What does lt.blue mean? Methodology and the Procedures used inthe Development of the Laboratory
Image Selection Criteria: Look for something familiar to Tucson / or something we do not have at all in Tucson Looked for a possible match in La Serena to compare and contrast features when analyzing Hypotheses Sent off image coordinates to La Serena school partners La Serena images received Hypotheses proved correct or incorrect, and more dialogue among students began Went on a Digital Image “Chinese Field Trip” Posted Images Created a PowerPoint Presentation Worked on English/Spanish-Spanish/English Translation Methodology and the Procedures used in the Development of the Laboratory (continued)
Hypothesis Confirmed - Tucson’s “A” Mountain (H/I –5/6) and La Serena’s “A” Mountain (K-19) are similar in shape which we predicted correctly. Null Hypothesis - Terraced Fields or Hot-houses for growing flowers C-6, turned out to be tall hotel rooms or condos along the beach. We are not sure about our other hypotheses at this time We need to gather more information before we can confirm and/or nullify our additional hypotheses Remote Sensing Lab Results
Topics We Found Interesting and That We Discussed • The things that made this project difficult were: - Not enough time - Lots of arguments with our peers about not wanting to work, not listening to instructions or our teacher - Too much work for the amount of time we had • We really liked: - seeing the ocean and water in a river - seeing the mountains • We want to learn more about the colors of your city and your region.
Final Conclusions What we learned doing the Remote Sensing Lab was: • What Tucson and Chile looked like in satellite images • What remote sensingis and some of its uses • The difference between False color imaging and true color imaging • Tides may influence the geography of the bay in La Serena • Local landmarks and geography and distant landmarks and geography sometimes share similar physical features • It is very important to study planet Earth’s physical features before studying other planets and moons. • The importance of “ground truthing,” satellites, and robotics in space missions • Trying to work together as a team
