Economics & Demographics • Unemployment rate: 7.1% (72nd in world) • Income/wealth distribution: lowest 10%: 1.6% highest 10%: 41.7% • GINI coefficient: 52.4 (16th in world) • Economic growth rate over past five years: about 4%
Major Industries • Mining - especially copper (which is over 1/3 of Chile government revenue), but there are other materials being mined for, such as lithium • Fish processing • Wood
Government • Currently a republic (representative democracy) • Declared independence from Spain in 1810 • Became democratic in 1990, after military dictatorship led by Augosto Pinochet • Current president: SebastiánPiñera • Previous president: Michelle Bachelet
Important Events • 1810-1818: Chilean war for independence from Spain • 1879-1884: Chile defeats Peru and Bolivia in the War of the Pacific • 1927: Carlos Ibañez del Campo becomes dictator of Chile • 1973: Bloody overthrow of Salvador Allendeby Augosto Pinochet (who would later become dictator) via a U.S.-backed coup • 2010 - Large earthquake causes massive destruction in Chile
Salvador Allende “These are my last words, and I am certain that my sacrifice will not be in vain, I am certain that, at the very least, it will be a moral lesson that will punish felony, cowardice, and treason.” -Salvador Allende, September 11, 1973 • Born on July 26, 1908 in Valparaiso, Chile • Attended University of Chile • Married HortensiaBussi • Became a physician • Democratically elected in 1970 (first Marxist democratically elected in Latin America) • Marxist, and disliked by the U.S. for this reason • Overthrown (and committed suicide) on September 11, 1973 in Santiago, Chile, as a result of a U.S.-backed coup lead by Augosto Pinochet, who would later became Chile’s dictator
Current Issues • Significant deforestation, which could have negative affects on Chile’s lumber industry and negative environmental consequences • Air pollution and water pollution, which could affect the fishing industry in Chile as well as lowering overall air and water quality • Threatened species (about 150), which could possibly go extinct and lower species diversity • Large-scale destruction caused by 2010 earthquake had negative economic affects • Border disputes with Peru and Bolivia • Illegal drugs (particularly cocaine)
