Jyllands-Posten is the name of newspaper who published the “offensive” cartoons. Ironically, it won an award against discrimination in 2005
On September 30th 2006 this same newspaper published 12 cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad. The most offensive portrayed the image of Mohammed with a bomb in his turban.

He wanted the cartoon to exploit the prophet Muhammad as pro-terrorism • “Anger”, he said, smiling, “is the best therapy” (Nytimes.com).
The Muslims reacted very strongly • (picture! Insert here)

Religious or Political • BOTH!! • Religious turmoil • Debate on freedom of speech and religious offense • Political turmoil • On February 4th, 2006, Syrians attack Danish and Norwegian embassies in Damascus • On February 5th, 2006, the Danish embassy Beirut was set on fire. • Danish embassies all over the world were attacked. • The Danish prime minister removed the Danish troops from Afghanistan because he did not want to put his soldiers in danger, due to the cultural differences and religious views, such as free speech.
Freedom of Speech • Over the years, Muslims have published many anti-semetic (anti-Jew) cartoons. • This is also a form of Muslim free speech, similar to the Danish cartoons. • Feb 13th 2006, an Iranian newspaper cast a competition for cartoons depicting the Holocaust.
