Types of Common Bacterial and Fungal Infections Affecting Dogs Dogs are without a doubt a man’s best friend. They are loved and adored because of their faithfulness and loyalty but unfortunately, they are prone to many health-related issues including infections. Dogs can catch numerous infections; some could be bacterial while others could be fungal. It is imperative to treat them before they become fatal, but before we do that let us delve deeper into the types of infections in dogs. Now, a brief description of them all… Bacterial Infection The following are types of bacterial infection in dogs. 1. Leptospirosis This infection is caused by a bacterium known as spirochetes which can affect both humans and animals including dogs. Dogs can get infected with Leptospirosis by coming in contact with contaminated or stagnant water or contacting other infected animals’ urine. 2. Staphylococcal Infection Bacteria known as Staphylococcus sp cause this type of infection. This infection affects a dog’s upper respiratory tract and skin and is one of the most common bacterial skin infections affecting dogs. 3. Bacterial Ear Infection
Yeast species known as Malassezia pachydermatis can cause bacterial ear infections in dogs. A dog with a weak immune system may find it hard to protect himself from the bacteria and thus, treatment is needed. 4. Actinomycosis This infection is caused by Actinomyces sp and is found predominantly in the soil. The kind of infection occurs when the bacterium enters the dog’s skin through a wound or abscess. 5. Nocardiosis Nocardia sp, a bacteria, cause this type of infection. This infection too is predominantly found in the soil and affects dogs by entering the skin through a wound or abscess. Fungal Infection The following are types of fungal infection in dogs. 1. Aspergillosis This particular fungal infection is caused by species of mold called Aspergillus. Dogs with a weak immune system are generally the ones that get infected with this infection. This most common form of this disease is the nasal form which occurs through the dog’s nose and sinuses. 2. Cryptococcus A yeast-like fungus called Cryptococcus neoformans causes this type of infection in dogs. This infection affects dogs when they inhale the spores found in the soil (contaminated with droppings). 3. Blastomycosis This fungus is found in moist rotting organic debris and bird droppings. Dogs are infected with Blastomycosis when they inhale infected spores present in the soil. If left untreated, it can cause serious health problems. Treating Infections in Dogs Infections in dogs can be treated in numerous ways.
