PROSTATE • SMALL CHESTNUT SIZED GLAND THAT SURROUNDS THE URETHRA(The tube that carries semen and urine) • Produces some milky fluid for semen • MOST COMMON PROBLEMS • Enlarged Prostate – squeezes the urethra and slows or stops the flow of urine - Prostate Cancer – Treatable disease with surgery or radiation
Testicles • There are 2 Testes located behind and under the Penis(one usually hangs lower than the other) • What do they do? • Make and store sperm(millions each day) • Produce Testosterone (a hormone that is produced during puberty that makes changes in the body)
Testicles Continued… • The scrotum holds the testes (sac) • The scrotum rises and falls, depending upon the temperature. (Sperm must be kept at a certain temperature) … ”Climate Control System”!! The function of the Epididymis– Collect and store sperm. It also helps the sperm to mature. Located just above the testes. • Guys can become fertile around the ages of 11-17 (able to ejaculate semen and reproduce)
Penis • Functions of the Penis: • Contains the urethra (passageway for urine and semen) • Erection – When sexually aroused, blood flows to the penis • 3 parts- • Glans – the tip of the penis • Shaft – runs from the glans to the base of the penis • Root – attaches to the wall of the abdomen
Vas Deferens – long tube that takes mature sperm from the Epididymis to the urethra for ejaculation (the discharge of semen from the penis) • Seminal Vesicles – sacs that are attached to the Vas Deferens. They produce sugar-rich fluid to give sperm energy to move.
