  1. Male Anatomy & Physiology

  2. The Penis • Composed mainly of spongy tissue • Becomes erect due to blood accumulation in its cylinders • If relatively small when flaccid, likely to greatly expand when erect • Enhanced at considerable risk • The glans (head) has many nerve endings

  3. More Penis • Parts include: the glans, root, & spongy body • Fractures only when erect and rarely • Penile cancer is uncommon • Risk factors include long time tobacco use • Circumcision drops the odds somewhat

  4. Circumcision • Surgical removal of the foreskin • Common, especially in North America • Performed for religious or hygienic purposes • Occasionally performed as a rite of passage • White males whose mothers attended college are the most likely to endure

  5. A Good Thing? • American Academy of Pediatrics has gone back and forth on this • Impact sexuality? • Masters and Johnson said no • NHSLS found more sexual problems with uncircumcised men

  6. The Scrotum • Pouch of skin beneath the groin which enclose the testes – (gonads) which produces sperm and sex hormones • Normally hangs loose but retracts when cold or stimulated

  7. The Delivery System • To transport sperm, a long, thin duct, the vas deferens, draws sperm from the interior of each testes and then when sexually stimulated, channels the sperm around the bladder to the seminal vesicle to the ejaculatory duct where it is combined with other fluids to form semen

  8. Does Size Matter? • Penis size is a matter of great concern for many men. Does it really matter? • Vaginas are most sensitive in their outer portion. • Some women find deep penetration painful. • Size is not related to body shape, height, race, or anything else.

  9. The Final Word • Women are no more sexually aroused by depictions of large penises than medium or small ones

  10. Koro • Formally known as Genital Retraction Syndrome, or shrinking penis • A cultural phenomenon of epic proportions • An ancient, bizarre rumor or delusion • Primarily occurs in Asia and Africa

  11. No, I’m not kidding • Men believe that they have caught a disease that causes their penis to shrink and retract into their body. • Like a turtle, koro (in Malaysian), retracts its head into its shell. • Then you die.

  12. Many Are Concerned • Fear spreads like wildfire, wide spread panic breaks out, thousands and thousands are convinced they are infected. • They hang on with all they have. • “Penis thievery” outbreaks, violence, murder

  13. Stopping Koro • Public education. • Even public measuring (!) events. • An anxiety based delusion, similar to a contagious panic attack spread among vulnerable men with sexual guilt and anxiety
