What is Engineering? • Defined as “A field of study or activity concerned with modification or development in a particular area” – Oxford Dictionary • Very broad and versatile profession • Has a large impact on the world and everyday life
Healthcare • Primarily associated with doctors and nurses • Impact of engineering is vast, but often goes unnoticed • Enormous contributions to healthcare: • Medical Imaging (MRI Scanners, CT Scanners) • Rehabilitation (Leg Braces, Crutches, Prosthesis)
Electronics • Part of the Digital Era where technology plays a large part in our lives • Engineers facilitate rapid development of electronics, including: • Consumer goods (phones and computers) • High Performance Computing (supercomputers) • Novel Computing Approaches (quantum & photonic)
Transport • Freedom of travel is highly desired • Evident from number of cars in UK (28.5 million) • Many developments in transport to date • Lots of scope for future engineering endeavours, such as: • Autonomous vehicles (Self-driving cars) • Rapid rail travel (HS2, Hyperloop) • Improved space travel (SpaceX – Colonising Mars)
Engineering Society • Who: Year 11-13 • Where: Meeting Room • When: Thursday Lunch (12:45 onwards) • What: Discussing fields and opportunities in engineering (with guest speakers) • First session tomorrow • Introduction to Engineering Disciplines by Dr. Carl Anthony from the University of Birmingham
Conclusion • If interested in Maths and Sciences, Engineering may be for you • It offers an unparalleled breadth of opportunities in numerous industries • Come along to Engineering Society and get involved with Engineering to find out whether it is right for you
