Environmental Systems Room 316 Ms. Thomas
Discuss the following questions with your shoulder partner and be ready to share your ideas with the class. • Have you ever been asked to collaborate with other people and to follow certain rules to achieve a common goal?
What would happen if you or your teammates decided not to follow these rules?
Now think about this… • Do you and I have a common goal we wish to achieve in this classroom setting?
CLASS NORMS • Let’s take a few minutes to create a set of classroom norms that will support a safe and successful learning environment for all students and the teacher.
Creating Norms • In groups of 3 decide on 3 rules that you would like to establish for your chemistry class. Phrase the rule as a “DO” and not a “DON’T”. • Make sure your rules are very specific and that you have a concrete example of what that behavior would look like. • Write them down on 3 separate sticky notes. • Be prepared to explain the value/ importance of your rules.
Place chairs around the room so that we can form a big circle. • Each group will share one of their rules. • Similar rules will be combined together. • A poster will be created for each class and posted in the room.
As your teacher I expect you to: • arrive on time and be prepared for class, with all assignments completed • keep all electronic devices, toiletries, food and beverages concealed in the front of the room. • put your best effort into your class assignments and class activities • come to class with a positive and respectful attitude • participate in tutorials when you are struggling with the material being taught
As a student in my class, you may expect me to: • be respectful of you and other students • be prepared and well organized • begin and end class on time • give you clear expectations and timely feedback on assignments • be available to assist you with individual concerns outside of class
I am truly honored to be your teacher. • Remember our common goal… • Let’s all have a great year!!!
